Georgia Nurses Association (GNA) Informatics Chapter

Last evening, I had the opportunity to attend the first meeting of the GNA Informatics chapter at a reception held by Roy Simpson at his beautiful home in Atlanta.  I met many new colleagues from Atlanta, Athens, Woodstock, Snellville, and more.  I also had the opportunity to see recent GCSU informatics grads - Omega and Micheline and visit with some of their mentors, Regina and Beth.

Roy conducted a great organizational meeting.  We formulated committees and decided to meet every other month - using webinar software (on a rotating basis, donated by one of our organizations).

Please spread the word about this chapter in Georgia.  For more information, go to the GNA website at http://www.georgianurses.org/.

  2. From Roy Simpson, GNA Informatics Chair--
Jeanne as always a leader you are and a Southern Lady with the charm of compliments. Thanks again, but you did not mention the girls (chickens and ducks) in the backyard in Ansley Park.
All attending took an opportunity to lead in driving GNA and Georgia nurses on nursing's newest specialty Nursing Informatics group in GNA. However, ANA identified in 1992 this exciting field of knowledge. The excitement on Wednesday was nice and the enthusiasm for "caring for Georgia residents" was clear.
In order to support our discipline's growth many of us are easing back into school. DNPs are here in informatics. Databases internal and external are growing in this exciting field. Taxonomies and nomenclatures identify our unique contribution to the profession. No longer is the Nursing informatician doing screen design 70% of the time, but they are leading the strategy in support of the vision of care to new heights. Those were some of the themes of the evening.
Research is pouring in with hospitals here in Georgia showing their research and sharing to enhance Georgia's population. It was great to hear colleagues talking about projects and outcomes of quality care in institutions at the grassroots level. One of the goals of the meeting was to set the agenda with research every meeting. It will set the tone for knowledge sharing.
Fran Beall our devoted and model professional was there to provide a presidential address and greeting. I think she was surprised at the number of colleagues in attendance from outside Atlanta. Fran gives so much to the care of Georgia in clinical practice and leadership. An example of support she gave was the role of an informatician in setting up data fields for research related to the influenza shots. She gave some of the data the system at the University identified for students. Data points like numbers of shots, reaction to shots and return on investment of time missed from school due to influenza.
Debbie Hatmaker made it being the GNA Programs Chair, but added some comments as the President of ANCC. She got the assignment of the secretary to engage the nominees to the committees. The innovation, the data for strategies of quality care set the tone. Debbie another gracious woman of Georgia said thank you to Cerner as our sponsor of good tidings and food.
Kaye Dawson from Athens Regional agreed to co-chair with me for the first year until we are ready to start the election process for officers. Kaye brings some experience from operations in informatics from her organization. With her skills for organization and drive for success, we only expect great things from Kaye.
So what does all this data mean to nurses and nursing? Well, without a healthy nation and an even healthier Georgia, we cannot get out of this economic disaster. If employers are looking for healthy Georgia and great quality and affordable care, the nurse informatician group will help get the data for sure.
We are formulating our mission statement. We need everyone to add their two cents to the mission. We cannot cover the world, but we can focus the laser on our goals and mission to accomplish. Data to research to bedside to caring for Georgia, the next Georgia governor get ready whoever you are – we nurses in Informatics are ready. So here's to the group, raise your glasses high, and your spirit of drive even higher. It's time for the data about nursing's unique contribution to health care to hit the news.
