Smartphone Sales Changes

I follow Tomi Ohonen's blog about smartphones.  He has been really good at predicting the changes in sales of smartphones.  In today's blog at Tomi Ohonen's Blog he noted that the Blackberry Rim was the second (behind Nokia) largest smartphone producer three years ago.  Today the Blackberry is no longer in the top ten and Nokia is sinking to the bottom of the list.  The game changer is China's Coolpad.  The changes we have seen with mobile devices in the past three years is mind boggling.

Smartphone Hacking

I read a several columns this morning about smartphone hacking.  The bad guys are out there to make millions off of innocent users.  The first article I read was posted over a year ago.  The prediction is coming true now in the United States.

The Android phones are the target of hackers because the code is open source and because of the popularity.

You can read more at
Smartphone users should be aware of the problem and be vigilant about the possibility of a hack.

Use of Mobile Apps for Health Information on the Increase

In the Informatics and Nursing textbook, we have mentioned PEW reports on the use of technology several times.  A new 2012 report provides insight on the use of mobile apps for health information.  You can review the summary of the report or download the entire report at http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2012/Mobile-Health.aspx

In brief - 3,014 English and Spanish speaking people in the United States participated in the study. Interviews were conducted using cell phones and land line phones. Of the participants, 85% owned a cell phone and 53% of the cell phones were smart phones.  Health information was accessed by 53% of smartphone owners and 5% of non-smartphone owners.

Those statistics are amazing!  It means that cell phones are empowering healthcare consumers.  The challenge that remains is to assist healthcare consumers to scrutinize the validity of websites that they are accessing.

MERLOT Mobile App - Contribute an App to MERLOT

MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resources for Learning and Online Teaching) needs your help.  We need for users to add mobile apps along with a brief description to the MERLOT database.  Of course, as a healthcare provider, I am especially interested in health related mobile apps. MERLOT is free for all users.  Just create a login and password to access the resources.

As of today, there are over 106,000 members from all over the world.

The timing is important because of the release of the MERLOT app for the iPhone, Blackberry, and Android phones (as well as the iPad and iPod touch).  A view of the MERLOT app is  noted below.

New iPhone Rumored for September

I read at 9 to 5 Mac that the new iPhone is expected to be released the middle of September.  It cannot be soon enough for me!!  My 3rd generation iPhone is not well.  It shut down unexpectedly about 6 times when I was at the Sloan C/MERLOT conference in Las Vegas last week.  There is no pattern for the shutdowns.

Now that I am home, it less stressful because I am use Messages for communication.  What is amazing to me is that I have had the phone for such a long time.  The potential problem with the next phone is that I may have to pay full price for the phone in order to keep my data plan.  Will have to do the ROI on that first.
