Evernote - Creating a Table of Contents

When I attended the Summer Institute of Nursing Informatics a couple of weeks ago, I used Evernote to take notes on all of the sessions.  I had taken my Bluetooth keyboard with me and it turned out to be very helpful the night I forgot to charge the iPad.  I was able to use my iPhone and the keyboard.

One way to organize a group of notes, such as with notes on multiple educational session, in Evernote is to create a table of contents.  A YouTube video demonstrates how.  In essence, you create a note titled Table of Contents and then copy and paste hyperlinks of the related notes.  View the video below to learn more.

PS - The process of creating a table of contents can be used with other apps, such as a word processing or spreadsheet document.

Hacking Medical Equipment and Security Risks

The news of the death of a 35-year-old hacker, Barnaby Jack (http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/infamous-hacker-barnaby-jack-dies-black-hat-convention-6C10760881), made me reflect on a presentation about the security of medical equipment at the 2013 SINI meeting. Barnaby Jack was a "white hat hacker" meaning that the purpose of his hacks was to demonstrate security risks so that they could be addressed.

According to the new article "Jack had planned to demonstrate his techniques to hack into pacemakers and implanted defibrillators at the Black Hat hackers convention in Las Vegas next Thursday. He told Reuters last week that he could kill a man from 30 feet away by attacking an implanted heart device."

I honestly had not considered security risks associated with medical equipment such as pacemakers, implanted defibrillators, or intravenous pumps.  Perhaps the reason is that I do not think like a cyber criminal.  However, we as healthcare professionals, need to understand that remote control of computerized medical equipment is possible.  We need to support the manufacturing companies that are working to eliminate security risks that may endanger the lives of our patients.

Windows 8 Issues Solution

First of all, I apologize to my readers for no postings in the last few weeks.  I took some much needed vacation.  Look for regaular postings beginning again in August.

Linda sent me an email about a work around issue that I found with Windows 8.  It is available at http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

It adds back the start menu.  It may be helpful to others who wanted to have a start menu.
